Wales FA appoint Noel Mooney as chief executive

Noel Mooney has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Football Association of Wales

The former League of Ireland goalkeeper, 44, leaves his role in UEFA where he was Head of Strategic Development.

In 2019, Mooney temporarily left his UEFA position to take over as interim chief executive of the FAI during a turbulent period for Irish football.

But he ruled out taking that job on a full-time basis and, after six months, returned to Switzerland at the end of that year.

In a FAW statement today, Limerick man Mooney said: “In this next chapter for Welsh football, we will grow and evolve the game to become more popular and successful.

“The mission is very clear and I can’t wait to work with everyone in Welsh football to reach our full potential.

“I have enjoyed collaborating with great people to grow European football at UEFA for the past decade.

“Now the focus will be on ensuring that the FAW becomes one of the best football associations globally at all levels by being strong locally across Wales.”

Mooney starts in late August and FAW President, Kieran O’ Connor said: “The FAW have identified Noel as the right person to manage the FAW into a new era of success and evolution.

“He has a vast experience of working across all European national associations over the past decade to grow European football.

“We are delighted that Noel has agreed to focus his experience and skillset to develop football in Wales.”

One of Mooney’s most pressing tasks will be sorting out the managerial situation with the Wales senior team.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs temporarily stepped aside in November and was charged with assault in April. He faces trial in January and denies the charges.

Assistant Robert Page has been promoted in his absence and was at the helm for the Euro 2020 finals.
