Wales' daily coronavirus deaths and cases update for Thursday, August 27

One new coronavirus death has been reported in Wales, figures show.

Public Health Wales (PHW), which records all lab-confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths, has published its latest daily update.

The number of new cases reported by PHW was 35. On Monday the number of new cases was 19, while Tuesday and Wednesday's figure was 28 and 34 respectively.

Deaths reported today: One

Cases reported today: 35

Number of new tests: 5,194

Total deaths with lab-confirmed coronavirus in Wales: 1,595

Deaths in Wales where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate (latest ONS data): 2,551

PHW said on Thursday the number of lab-confirmed positive cases of coronavirus in Wales had increased by 35 to bring the total to 17,843.

Cardiff had the highest number of new cases with 10 reported.

Newport saw the second-highest with five new cases, and Caerphilly recorded three.

Wrexham, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Carmarthenshire reported two.

Blaenau Gwent, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Powys all reported one new case each.

All other local authorities reported no new cases.

These are the areas with the highest seven-day rolling averages for new cases - one of the key benchmarks watched by Public Health Wales.

All figures are reported as cases adjusted for population (100k people).

Cardiff: 13.9 cases

Merthyr Tydfil: 11.6 cases

Ceredigion: 5.5 cases

Carmarthenhire: 4.2 cases

So-called "true" death figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which include deaths in all places and also when Covid-19 is suspected rather than confirmed, found that 2,551 had died with the virus in Wales registered up to August 14.

Despite testing capacity standing at more than 15,000 each day in Wales, 4,910 tests took place on Wednesday, August 26.

Health minister Vaughan Gething gave an update on the situation in Wales on Tuesday (August 25).

He said new cases had continued to fall steadily since the peak in April, and the number remained low.

In the seven days before the press conference, he said the daily figures showed that 34,809 tests were carried out which led to 177 positive cases, a positivity rate of 0.5%.

The Welsh Government is expected to announce a decision this week about whether masks will become compulsory for pupils as schools re-open on September 1.
