Wales confirm Ross Moriarty injury as uncapped flanker called up to autumn squad

Shane Lewis-Hughes has been called into the Wales autumn squad with Ross Moriarty having picked up a worrying ankle injury.

The uncapped Cardiff Blues flanker had been training with the group for the past week while his regional team-mate Josh Navidi has been recovering from concussion.

But now he’s been formally added to the squad in the wake of Moriarty suffering an ankle injury on Wednesday.

Dragons back rower Moriarty had been due to start on the blindside against France in Paris this Saturday.

He has now been replaced at 6 by his regional colleague Aaron Wainwright, with James Davies coming on to the bench.

Moriarty will undergo a scan in the next day or so, with the hope being that he will be out for weeks rather than months.

For 23-year-old blindside Lewis-Hughes, it’s a second call-up to the senior Wales squad.

He was in the first group Wayne Pivac selected for the game against the Barbarians last November.

Now he has been rewarded for his outstanding form for the Blues, which has seen him lead the early season tackle count in the Guinness PRO14.

Explaining the latest development, Pivac said: “On the blindside, there is an ankle injury to Ross Moriarty.

“He was down to start this Test match.

“He picked up an injury in training yesterday (Wednesday) and unfortunately he won’t be right for the weekend.

“So Aaron Wainwright takes the slot and James Davies comes on to the bench.

“With Ross, the next few days will tell a story.

“He will get a scan and we are hoping it will be a handful of weeks as opposed to months.”
