Wales confirm late change to the side to face England after training ground injury

Wales have confirmed that there is a late change to the squad that will face England at Twickenham tomorrow in the first of four Rugby World Cup warm-ups.

Scrum-half Tomos Williams, who was named on the bench, picked up a shoulder injury during training on Friday morning.

At his press conference, head coach Warren Gatland speculated that he would probably be ruled out of the trip to London and so it has come to pass.

Aled Davies, who was travelling to Twickenham anyway, has been brought into the squad with the Cardiff Blues livewire dropping out of the side.

The extent of Williams' injury is currently unknown but Gatland and his deputies will be keen to learn the results of further assessments as soon as possible.

"There’s a good chance that Tomos Williams may not be on the bench on Sunday," said Gatland yesterday.

"He got a shoulder knock in training today. I don’t know the extent of that but it would probably rule him out of Sunday.

"We originally picked Cory Hill in the second row but his ankle is a little bit tight and we decided it wasn’t worth the risk.

"If we feel we need to protect some players then we’ll do that.

"Fingers crossed that we don’t pick up too many injuries going forward, we’re bound to get one or two more but hopefully not too many."

Wales name their final 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup on September 2.

Meanwhile, England have also been forced into making late changes of their own.

Centre Henry Slade has withdrawn with a knee problem, flanker Sam Underhill is out with a toe injury and winger Ruaridh McConnochie, who was poised to make his debut, misses out with a hip injury.

Jonathan Joseph and Joe Cokanasiga come in for the injured backs, whilst Tom Curry switches to openside to replace Underhill, with Lewis Ludlam now starting at six.

Courtney Lawes and Manu Tuilagi come onto the bench for Eddie Jones' side.
