Wales centre signs for Welsh region after two years out injured

Wales international Cory Allen has signed for the Dragons after four years with the Ospreys.

The 28-year-old centre has trained with the east Wales region in pre-season.

Now he has put pen to paper on a deal with Dean Ryan’s team, with Allen looking for a fresh start after an injury-plagued two years.

Director rugby Ryan said: “Cory is a talented player who has had a tough couple of years.

“He’s working really hard with our medical team and we are encouraged by his progress and we hope to see him on the field in a Dragons jersey”.

Viewed as a big talent when he came through Cardiff’s academy, Allen scored a hat-trick for Wales in their opening match of the 2015 World Cup, against Uruguay, and featured twice in Tests on the southern hemisphere tour led by Robin McBryde in 2017.

The following year at the Ospreys, the Llandarcy-based team’s then attack coach Matt Sherratt touted him as a possibility for Wales' 2019 World Cup squad.

But Allen suffered a major knee injury playing against Ulster in Belfast on the opening night of the 2019-20 season and hasn’t featured since.

The Dragons will hope the 6ft 3in, 16st 6lb player can add to their options at outside centre.

The six-cap player said: “Firstly I’d like to say I’m very grateful to Dean and the Dragons for giving me every opportunity to get back to full fitness and continue playing the game I love.

"My time here so far has been very encouraging and I am making great progress and hopefully not too far off returning.

“I’m really excited by what I’ve seen so far and I can’t wait to get out on the field with the boys."
