Wales call up Saracens prop Sam Wainwright for summer tour of South Africa after injury blow

Wales have called up unheralded Saracens prop Sam Wainwright for their summer tour of South Africa.

He replaces Dragons tight-head Leon Brown, who has withdrawn from the squad after failing to recover from nerve damage in his shoulder which he suffered while on Dragons duty.

The 24-year-old began his rugby journey at Rhyl before becoming a regular in the Welsh Premiership for RGC. He caught the eye of the English giants and signed for the club in the summer of 2019 and has featured 18 times.

However the majority of his appearances so far came when Sarries were in the Championship. Wainwright has played just six games at Premiership level, with two appearances in the European Challenge Cup.

Wainwright will join up with the Wales squad at their Vale Resort training base following the conclusion of the English Premiership season. Sarries have a semi-final against Harlequins this weekend.
