After losing Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb from their World Cup squad last week, Wales were forced to replace a replacement when the wing Eli Walker, who joined the 31 in place of Halfpenny, suffered a hamstring injury in training. He is considered unlikely to be fit for at least the first three group matches.
Walker was replaced not by another back but by a forward, an indication Liam Williams, who has not played since last season because of a foot injury, has made a full recovery and will start Wales’s opener against Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.
The flanker Ross Moriarty, who made an impact from the bench in Wales’s final warm-up match against Italy five days after being left out of the squad, has been called up. It gives Wales a split of 18 forwards and 13 backs.
