Wales call up Cardiff Blues scrum-half Lloyd Williams after defeat to France

Cardiff Blues scrum-half Lloyd Williams has been called up to the Wales squad.

The 30-year-old was due to play for the Welsh region against Munster on Monday night but was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up after receiving the call.

WalesOnline understands that Williams has been called up to the squad officially, rather than in an informal capacity to make up the numbers in training.

After Wales' disappointing 38-21 defeat in Paris on Saturday night, Samson Lee was the only apparent injury concern after failing a head injury assessment.

Wales boss Wayne Pivac did say bruised bodies would be assessed early this week. Williams' arrival in camp could mean that one of Rhys Webb, Gareth Davies or Kieran Hardy are carrying a knock, though nobody is leaving the Wales squad at this point.

Wales' next game comes against Scotland, in the final round of the 2020 Six Nations, this Saturday.

Williams is not a total stranger to the setup, having won 28 caps for Wales between 2011 and 2016, playing at two Rugby World Cups under former boss Warren Gatland.

He has started the season in fine form for his region and was name-checked by Blues boss John Mulvihill as a possible call-up before Pivac named his squad earlier this month.
