One of Wales’ most promising young talents Sam Costelow has been training with Wayne Pivac’s senior Six Nations squad.
The under-20s fly-half has started the last two games for Gareth Williams’ age grade side but has been in senior camp over the last week.
Costelow, who is currently with Leicester Tigers but expected to join the Scarlets shortly, has been called in to keep the numbers up in training.
During the fallow week, starting pivot Dan Biggar was going through his graduated return to play protocols following a failed head injury assessment in Dublin. His participation will have been limited.
Wales have also lost Owen Williams for the remainder of the campaign after suffering a hamstring injury in Dublin.
It leaves them with only Jarrod Evans as a fly-half option in training.
Costelow’s involvement with the senior team was welcomed by under-20s head coach Williams.
“It’s good exposure for Sam and hopefully he has a chance to harness the lessons that we discussed after the Ireland defeat in that environment," said Williams.
“Then he can bring it back into our environment.
“[When] We get some individuals who get that exposure at senior level and it shows.”
Wales forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys spoke of the arrangement in Tuesday's press conference, saying: "It’s great.
"We’re trying to foster really close relationships with the under-20s, not just bringing them in for training days but to actually give them a taste of what the senior setup is about.
"Sam has been excellent. He’s certainly one for the future for us."
Though he has trained with the senior squad, Costelow is not an official call-up and will be available for the under-20s’ fixture against France in Colwyn Bay on Friday night.
