Wales boss Ryan Giggs backs Gareth Bale to carry on scoring but admits he wasn't happy with team

Wales boss Ryan Giggs saluted matchwinner Gareth Bale and backed him to carry om scoring.

Bale popped up with a Euro 2020 qualifying winner near the end of the 2-1 Cardiff City Stadium triumph over Azerbaijan, a priceless goal that brought Wales back into contention in the group.

Bale admitted it had been a tough battle and likened the occasion to a 2-1 last-gasp victory against Andorra at the beginning of Euro 2016 qualifying.

Bale popped up with the winner on that occasion for Chris Coleman and did the same again for Giggs this time.

"He's scored so many important goals for Wales over the years. He's the captain, everyone looks up to him," beamed a relieved Giggs afterwards.

"I said before the game that usually when Gareth scores goals he keeps on scoring, so I was delighted to see him on the scoresheet for Real Madrid at the weekend!

"He showed great character, like the rest of the team, and I'm really pleased for him."

Giggs admitted it wasn't a great Wales performance, though, saying: "Obviously I'm happy with a crucial win. It was a tough game and we came through to get the three points.

"But I wasn't happy with the first half, if I'm honest. We made too many mistake, too many players were off form and we needed to move the ball quicker.

"The players showed great character to come through and win it and I'm delighted about that, but there were things I was disappointed with and which we can definitely work on.

"We knew there would be goals if we stuck to our game plan, what we had worked on in training. But we were too hasty, in too much of rush to make those forward passes. We weren't  patient enough and we needed the second goal.

"I've been in games like that and it's not easy. You don't know whether to stick or twist, but must always have that confidence on the ball."
