Wales and Pontypridd rugby legend Russell Robins dies

Former Lions, Wales and Pontypridd great Russell Robins has died, aged 87.

He played in all four Tests for the best of British and Irish rugby as the Lions drew their Test series with South Africa 2-2.

A lock or a back-row forward, Robins was an innovative player who changed the concept of the No.8 role.

His contribution to the Lions earned him a reputation as one the finest exponents of back-row play in the world.

By playing in 17 of the 24 tour matches, Robins appeared in more games than any other Lion during the arduous three-month tour.

Robins made 184 appearances for Pontypridd between 1949 and 1959 and was capped 13 times by Wales before making the switch to rugby league with 13-a-side giants Leeds.

He was a Pontypridd stalwart throughout his life, and in recent years was still a regular spectator at home and away matches.
