Wales and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey issues statement after alleged Nazi salute verdict

Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has had a charge against him for making an alleged Nazi salute found not proven by an Independent Regulatory Commission.

A picture posted by Hennessey's Crystal Palace team-mate Max Meyer on Instagram showed the Eagles' stars celebrating their narrow 1-0 FA Cup victory over Grimsby Town in January.

Hennessey took to social media in the immediate aftermath to deny making "an inappropriate type of salute" in the picture, which was swiftly removed from Instagram.

And, following today's ruling, Hennessey said in a statement: "I’m delighted that the FA have found me not guilty of this charge.

"This was a genuinely innocent moment, which appeared to be something completely different when captured on camera.

"I want to state for the record that I abhor all forms of racism, fascism, anti-semitism or discrimination of any kind.”

Hennessey was charged by the FA for an alleged breach of Rule E3 (2) which, according to the FA, “includes reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion and/or belief.”

But after an investigation, the FA have confirmed that the Wales international has had the charge against found not proven.

An FA statement read: "Wayne Hennessey has had a charge against him for a breach of FA Rule E3 found not proven by an Independent Regulatory Commission.

"It was alleged that a gesture he made, which was captured by a photograph and posted on social media, was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, contrary to FA Rule E3(1).

"It was further alleged that this constituted an ‘aggravated breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion and/or belief.

"The Crystal Palace goalkeeper had denied the charge and requested a personal hearing."
