Wales accidentally declared a 'republic' on Sky News weather forecast

The outlook for those wanting Welsh independence suddenly seemed bright last night after a weather forecaster on Sky News declared the country a republic.

The announcement was made on yesterday afternoon's broadcast and the meteorological mix-up certainly caught the attention of viewers this side of the Severn.

The gaff took place as predictions were being made for how conditions might look for those of us waking up and throwing back the curtains at 6am today.

"Some places will have hail and thunder," said the presenter, adding, "Elsewhere, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Wales and western England will see plenty of dry and bright weather. But Scotland and the far north of England will remain cloudier and wet."

And the slip of the tongue ended up causing a stir on social media, with #RepublicofWales eventually trending on Twitter.

"Did I miss the independence announcement?" tweeted Dominic Gamson - AKA @draiggoch99.

"Is there a @YesCymru mole at @SkyNews?"

And there were lots of others online who were keen to enquire if the satellite broadcaster had got wind of some insider political information.

"Republic of Wales? How long have I been asleep?" asked one confused viewer, while another posted, "Where do I send my passport application?"

Meanwhile, Tywysog y Moch added, "God, that rolls off the tongue!"

But not everyone was on board with the sudden declaration of independence.

"We’ll still have s**t weather though," posted Gwilym Cox.
