Walan Giiny (strong heart) exhibits the stories of the Indigenous artists living with disabilities on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The community-sourced exhibition features works by the Nandjimadji art group, who express their stories through creative works on canvas, wheelchairs, wheelie-walkers, and in one case, on a six-metre-long outrigger canoe.
Art plays an integral role in the healing process for community members with disability and has a part in the traditional storytelling method of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The exhibition was created as part of the library’s kuril dhagun community exhibition program which aims to address issues of social isolation and provide culturally respectful services and support.
