Never upset a Radio 4 listener. The mobilisers of middle England are a fearsome group, committed to the resistance of change.
Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer clearly thought that ditching an early morning piece of whimsical music and replacing it with up-to-the-minute news was the sort of sensible plan that no one would be upset by. A serious misjudgement: already there is a save the radio 4 theme website and hundreds of complaints.
Damazer is an extremely experienced news executive, but this is his first big job in radio. One small piece of advice: Remember James Boyle? He tried to modernise Radio 4, admittedly with 55 scheduling changes in one go, and upset one of the most critical audiences in the world. He left the BBC after an extremely troubled tenure.
