Wakefield fire: Two day operation for fire crews as asbestos fears confirmed

Fears of asbestos in the Speedibake building fire have been confirmed by the fire service.

The update from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service comes as they say firefighters could be there for up to two days.

Rumours had been circulating on social media saying asbestos is in the smoke.

However, although this is still unconfirmed, the fire service has said the construction of the building itself could contain it.

The fire broke out at Speedibake at Westgate Retail Park around 1.30pm on Saturday.

Police have warned people in the surrounding area to keep all windows and doors closed.

West Yorkshire Police issued a statement to say no injuries have been reported.

In the fire service's latest update at 6pm, they state crews remain at the scene and could do for 24-48 hours.

The update read: "Crews remain in attendance at the building fire in Wakefield city centre.  There are 2 aerial ladder platforms, 3 large jets and 6 breathing apparatus in use.

"The building construction may contain asbestos but at this moment in time it is unconfirmed as to whether it is present in the smoke plume.  As a precautionary measure we are advising people living in the vicinity to remain indoors and keep windows and a doors closed.

"We anticipate that we will be in attendance for the next 24-48 hours. Please avoid the area to allow emergency services to deal with the incident."

Police statement

In the police's statement, they said: “Police were called to Speedibake on the retail park at 1.30 this afternoon.

“No injuries have been reported.

“A number of roads around the area are closed including the junction from Westgate onto Ings Road and this is causing traffic on surrounding routes in Wakefield City Centre.

“Anyone living in the City Centre is asked to keep their windows and doors closed.

“Please avoid the area.”
