Wake up and see the coffee

Drink in the coffee art on YouTube

Art, someone once said, is everywhere. So it might not just have been my heavy caffeine dependence talking this morning when I found myself captivated by a short video of the astonishing things that can be done on the top of a nice cup of Italian coffee. Where has latte art been all my life? (Here, it turns out, here and, more alarmingly, here.)

Personally I'm not so sure about all those cutesy bunny heads, tree shapes and heart squiggles: surely there's a case to be made for something a bit steelier, more contingent and exploratory when it comes to caffeinated art. The Max Ernst or Jackson Pollock (or even Da Vinci) of baristas has still, perhaps, to be found. Still, it's art and coffee, a fine combination (and here I can't resist shoehorning in my favourite fact about cappuccino, the surprising derivation of its name). Cheers.
