Why Wake Forest Will Win
Utah State will still be good under new head coach Gary Andersen, but there are a whole lot of key stars from last year needing to be replaced, most notably up front.
The offensive line loses four starters, and the receiving corps doesn’t have most of the playmakers who made the amazing O go. Wake Forest might not have a brick wall of a defense, but most of the top tacklers are back, starting with a great-looking linebacking corps.
Offensively, the Demon Deacons have a strong receiving corps that should be able to keep the pressure on the Aggie secondary, but …
Why Utah State Will Win
Can Wake Forest somehow get to Jordan Love?
The defensive line couldn’t do much of anything against the run, and now it’s going through a bit of a rebuild. Even when there was hope for some instant help, it lost Old Dominion transfer Miles Fox to a torn Achilles tendon.
The Demon Deacons have the corners, but they won’t generate enough pressure on the ultra-accurate Love, and they’ll have problems in the middle of the field.
Utah State’s quick-hitting offensive style might not control much of the clock, but it’ll set the tone. Wake Forest has to prove it can keep up against a veteran defense.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s going to be a rough fight for the Demon Deacons, but they’ll get the offense going right away and force the Aggies to press. As good as Utah State will be as the season goes on, it’s not going to be as sharp as it needs to be right away.
Love will have a massive game, but the Demon Deacons will find their groove late to barely survive on a score in the final moments of a terrific battle.
