Waiver claim A.J. Reed joins White Sox in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. — First baseman A.J. Reed, claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros Monday, was added to the White Sox’ 25-man roster and will be in uniform when the team opens a three-game series against the Athletics Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

Reed, 26, batted .224/.329/.469 with 12 homers, 11 doubles and 35 RBI for Class AAA Round Rock this season.

In the month of June, he hit seven homers, posted a .987 OPS and drove in 22 runs over 23 games.

The 6-4, 270-pound Reed bats and throws left handed and figures to get at-bats as a designated hitter and backup first baseman. A 2014 second-round draft choice, Reed has appeared in 48 games over parts of three seasons with the Astros (2016-18), hitting .153 with three home runs and eight RBI.

He will wear uniform No. 24.
