Waitrose vows it will not sell chlorinated chicken and hormone-pumped beef

Waitrose has vowed to shun chlorinated chicken and hormone-pumped beef if the products are part of a Brexit trade deal with the US.

Boss James Bailey wrote in the store’s Weekend magazine: “We promise we will never sell any Waitrose product that does not meet our own high standards.”

A Which? poll found 86% of consumers fear a weakening of standards could lead to the import of products now banned here.

And some 95% of the 2,000 people polled want to keep existing food standards after Brexit.

US chicken reared in insanitary conditions is washed in chlorine – and red meat is injected with hormones.

Both would be banned under EU regulations but could end up in restaurants, hospitals, fast-food outlets and schools unlabelled if the US deal goes through.

A Department for International Trade official said chlorinated chicken would not be allowed into Britain.
