Waitrose store removing recycling bins after 'misuse'

The Waitrose store in Portishead will remove its recycling facility due to issues with flytipping and "contamination".

The supermarket on Harbour Road has bins where people can drop mixed glass, paper, cardboard, cans, plastic and cartons — but the service will permanently close at 5pm on Tuesday (May 25).

A spokeswoman for Waitrose said: "Hygiene and the safety of our customers is absolutely paramount to Waitrose and following a series of incidents of misuse and fly tipping we have unfortunately had to remove the recycling bins.

"We are very sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause."

A notice at the facility says the closure is due to "persistent flytipping and insufficient servicing at this site".

When we visited the site, local resident, Norman Bartlett, told us it was a "great shame". Watch the footage at the top of this page for our video report.

North Somerset Council is looking for a replacement site which could offer a recycling facility in the town.

"Unfortunately there have been several instances of flytipping at the recycling facilities in Portishead Waitrose car park, as well as increased contamination of the materials presented," said a council spokesman.

"As a result, Waitrose have asked us to remove the recycling banks and we are now searching for a suitable alternative location in Portishead.

"All the materials which were previously accepted at this facility (mixed glass, paper, cardboard, cans, plastic and cartons) can be put in household recycling boxes for collection each week.

"For more information about what else can go in your recycling box go to www.n-somerset.gov.uk/recycling."
