Waitrose says couples and families shouldn't shop together to combat coronavirus

Supermarkets across the UK have already taken measures to reduce crowding in their shops and Waitrose is now asking only one person from a household to shop at one time.

As the number of coronavirus infections and deaths continues to rise, shops are taking more precautions to limit the spread, reports the Mirror. Shopping is one of the four reasons it is acceptable to leave the house as per governments guidance.

Unless you are shopping for essential goods, picking up medical supplies, travelling to work (because you can't work from home) or exercising, the government has said people should be staying indoors as they enforce a lockdown to combat the virus.

The “one customer per household” rule has been rolled out across all 338 UK Waitrose stores.

There are Waitrose stores in Westbury-on-Trym, a small store in Clifton, in Portishead and at the Gordano services.

A spokesperson told The Sun: "In line with the Government’s guidance on social distancing we’re asking customers to help us manage the number of people in our shops - by sending only one member of the household to do their shopping, if they possibly can.

"While this won’t be possible for everybody, we are very grateful for our customers’ support in this difficult situation."

Lidl, Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland and Sainsbury's have all installed protective screens for staff, while Waitrose has ordered screens and visors for its workers.

Many staff members are wearing gloves and plenty of hand-sanitisers are located near tills.

Shops across Bristol and the UK have also enforced a maximum number of shoppers allowed in their stores at one time, with a 'one in, one out' being enforced.

Tesco is only allowing 50 customers at any one time in its larger stores, while cashless payment is being encouraged across the UK. Shops have also put down markers inside and outside of their stores to mark a 2m distance, in line with government guidelines.
