Waitrose faces backlash after labelling dark chocolate duck 'ugly'

Waitrose temporarily pulled their Trio of Easter Ducklings from shelves after a backlash over the dark chocolate one being named "Ugly".

The supermarket chain faced criticism from a customer who shared a picture of the three ducks, which featured a milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate duck.

A caption under the milk chocolate duck read “crispy”, while the white chocolate duckling was labelled “fluffy”. Below the dark chocolate duck, it read “ugly”.

Waitrose have apologised for the product description and temporarily withdrew the product from sale as it redesigned the packaging with new labelling.

Sharing an image of the Easter product, one shopper wrote: “Crispy, Fluffy and Ugly – trio of Easter ducklings at #waitrose. Ugly is the dark one on the right.

“Overheard women saying ‘this is not right’. I agree, doesn’t look good at all. Thousands of other options…why ugly?????”

A spokesman for the company told the Standard: “We are very sorry for any upset caused by the name of this product, it was absolutely not our intention to cause any offence.

“We removed the product from sale several weeks ago while we changed the labelling and our ducklings are now back on sale.”
