Waitress star Katharine McPhee reveals Meghan Markle's musical beginnings with throwback photo

Actress Katharine McPhee has shared a never-before-seen photo of the Duchess of Sussex, taken when the two future stars were starting out on their careers.

“Meghan and I did musicals together as kids,” she captioned the image which was posted on Instagram.

“She grew up to be the Duchess of Sussex and I grew up to star on the West End, so same life if you ask me.”

The post, showing the pair beaming in bright red lipstick, soon went viral and was liked by more than 60,000 people within hours.

Like Meghan, McPhee, pictured, was born in California. She was the runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006, before establishing herself as an actress.

The 34-year-old went on to land starring roles on NBC musical drama Smash and the series Scorpion.

In February 2018, McPhee made her Broadway debut in Waitress which has now transferred to London, with previews opening next week. The show marks her West End debut and follows the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage.

Meghan, meanwhile, was set to return to her theatrical roots today with a visit to the Bristol Old Vic theatre. The pregnant duchess, 37, and Prince Harry were being taken on a guided tour of the attraction which is undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration.
