Lyndsey Winship’s review (Ockham’s Razor: Tess review – circus spin finds light and laughter in Thomas Hardy’s tale, 1 February) was highly entertaining. For their next show, however, Ockham’s Razor might follow the precepts of their inspiration and have a crack at Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. A few circus stunts would also liven that one up.

• In our small village in the 1970s our Young Wives’ Group held a monthly nearly new sale where we took clothes our children had outgrown (Something strange has happened to high street clothes – so I’ve taken action, 1 February). The clothes were long-lasting, well-made, from the usual stores, and the children had no idea they were wearing each other’s clothes. We mothers had little money for new, but charities benefited.

• Although I’ve never been a fan of curtains (Letters, 1 February), passersby of all shapes and sizes not only stare in through the window but often wave and, if we’re really lucky, engage in mouthing things like “Hello there”, “Ooh how cosy” and, yesterday, “That looks tasty, can I have a sausage?”

• David Gent’s letter (2 February) about pouring his mother’s tea reminded me of the response of a Dutch campsite owner when I complained that the showers were cold. “You are too short,” he said, “the water has got cold before it reaches you.” I am 1m 60cm.
