History fans, and those looking to hit their step targets, will have to wait a little longer for Dumbarton Castle to reopen - after it wasn’t included in a list of Historic Scotland venues to reopen from April 30.
Historic Environment Scotland has said that it will take a phased approach to reopening venues, with 70 percent of its attractions set to welcome visitors once again when restrictions are loosened on Friday April 30.
Glasgow Cathedral, Edinburgh Castle and Fort George are amongst the 27 attractions reopening at the end of the month, with social distancing remaining in place, caps on visitor numbers and tickets having to be booked in advance.
However those hoping to take in the views from Dumbarton Rock will have a little longer to wait.
A spokesperson for Historic Environment Scotland said: “We’ll be releasing further information on sites due to reopen as part of a rolling programme of reopenings which will include Dumbarton.
“As you can imagine with over 5000 years of history to unlock across Scotland we’re approaching the reopening of sites on a phased basis. This looks at the individual requirements for each site as well as conservation requirements.”
Alex Paterson, Chief Executive of HES, added: “Scotland’s heritage attractions are a key part of our tourism sector both nationally and at a local community level, and contribute to our individual wellbeing, so we’re delighted to once again be opening sites up across the country.
“This will see us reopen all of the sites we reopened last year on the 30 April as well as further sites across the country on a phased basis over the upcoming months.
“As always, the safety of our staff and visitors has been at the forefront of our planning, enabling safe access to our properties in line with Scottish Government guidance and our minimum operating standards which underpin our approach.
“We’re also pleased to tell the story of the sites through technology so visitors have the opportunity to experience the old and the new when they are exploring some of our most iconic sites and enjoying a piece of 5,000 years of history.”
Tourist attractions across the country can reopen from April 26 under the current Scottish Government roadmap out of lockdown.
