A man who suffered critical burns in South Australia's Riverland was rushed to hospital overnight, with police making an arrest after a bottle was thrown at the attending ambulance.

The 27-year-old victim suffered critical injuries in Waikerie about 12:40am.

Emergency services were called to Hall Crescent "after reports a person at the address had received significant burns to their body", police said in a statement.

The man was taken to the hospital in Waikerie before being transferred by helicopter to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

A 26-year-old woman who was also at the Waikerie property was arrested after she allegedly threw a bottle at the attending ambulance, smashing a window.

She was charged with property damage and will appear in court next month.

Police have said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man's injuries are in their early stages but they "do not believe the incident is suspicious".

They have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
