WAGsgate: The Washington Post Has August Too

In a development clearly designed to evoke its famous past, the Washington Post has unleashed its legendary sleuthing powers on a hot tip - and the result is a totally searing investigation entitled WAGs: They Score!

There is, of course, nothing more validating than having possibly our most edifying cultural phenomenon deep-throated by such a fine organ - though we sense the definite spasms of a gag reflex in references to footballers' wives as people "without whom the British tabloids apparently couldn't publish".

Fair enough. But we'll see you, and raise you a Spears.

For the more advanced British student, the piece is really little more than a basic backgrounder, but we hope it paves the way for a series of finely poised editorial judgements and hard-hitting exclusives that will ultimately bring down Alex Curran. You just KNOW she's been careless somewhere along the way.

Anyways, one final point. During the World Cup last year, Lost in Showbiz wrote a piece noting that the WAGs "can drop the GDP of Ecuador in a two-hour shopping spree" - so it's a total pleasure to discover the Washington Post reporter referring to WAGs "dropping the GDP of a small country in an afternoon shopping spree".

Happy to be an inspiration, baby! Although, I did have to spend a long time in an underground parking garage to nail that one down, so can I get an additional reporting byline on the Pulitzer?
