Wagon driver fled after crashing into Southport Pier

A busy Merseyside road remains closed after a lorry collided with Southport Pier this afternoon.

The driver is said to have left the scene, before being traced by police officers shortly afterwards.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman told the ECHO : "We were contacted at just before 1.20pm today, following reports a wagon had been in collision with Southport Pier.

"The vehicle is believed to have left the area following the incident. The driver has since been traced and is in the process of being spoken to by officers.

"There are no reports of anyone being injured and structural engineers are en route to establish if any damage has been caused.

"There are road closures in place and motorists are advised to avoid the surrounding area.

"Enquiries into the collision are ongoing."

Engineers were called out to the pier to assess the damage, with hundreds of visitors to the attraction told to leave while they carried out their inspection.

It's not the first time a vehicle has collided with the Grade II listed structure.

In July of last year, a heavy goods vehicle struck the underside of the pier.

Some of the venues along the pier were closed as they were unable to be accessed following the crash, though were able to reopen once Sefton Council agreed the pier was safe.

Marine Drive remains closed, with the engineers' findings still to be recorded.

Anyone with information that may help police is advised to message via Twitter, @MerPolCC or @MerPolTraffic, quoting log 512 of September 7.
