Wagatha Christie trial could be a Hollywood film, with directors 'scrambling for deal'

The Wagatha Christie trial is set to be turned into a Hollywood film, with a string of directors reportedly scrambling for a deal. The High Court drama – the culmination of a three-year battle between Rebekah Vardy, 40, and Coleen Rooney, 36 – ended on Friday with Rooney emerging victorious. For many, it has been followed as much for its glamour as for the intrigue and betrayal of trust at its centre.

Rooney's friend Lizzie Cundy said: “I was on the phone to Bruno Tonioli, he was with a Hollywood director who wants to make a film. It’s not just him, lots of people in Hollywood have their eye on it. America can’t believe the headlines it courted around the world.”

On Friday a judge ruled that Rooney's accusation that Vardy had leaked personal information about her was “substantially true”. Rooney told Cundy, 54, the result “was the best outcome” she could have hoped for. TV presenter Cundy, previously married to footballer Jason Cundy, said: “She is just incredibly grateful for how it’s all panned out.”

Rooney is expected to fly to Washington with husband Wayne, who is now manager of Major League Soccer side DC United. Cundy said of Rooney’s feelings towards Vardy: “She doesn’t wish her any ill will… but I don’t think they will ever be friends.”

It came as Rooney, 36, was said to be in "advanced talks" in telling her story in a documentary series made by Lorton films, which also made the documentary titled Rooney, about her husband. The Liverpool-born wife, known in footballing and social media circles as a member of the WAGs — wives and girlfriends of football stars — will reportedly tell the story of how she felt betrayed when stories about her were being leaked to a national newspaper in 2019.

To find the culprit she planted some false stories and narrowed down the field of people to whom she sent the stories. After he detective work and in true Agatha Christie style, she finally accused Rebekah Vardy of leaking the stories to the Press.

Rooney's friend previously told the Mirror: “Coleen has remained quiet ever since that famous online post. But this could all change in what could be the TV event of the year. Viewers would see all the evidence that Coleen has forensically gathered via her online sleuthing and see why she is convinced that Rebekah leaked the stories about her and others.

"She is minded to get it all out into the pubic domain and let people make their own minds up. Talks are very well advanced.” A potential deal with Netflix is also reportedly on the cards, but it's looking like the show will be snapped up by Amazon Prime, as reported by the Mirror, and could be released later this year.
