Wagamama to reopen four UK restaurants as part of takeaway trial

High street restaurant chain Wagamama is set to reopen this week - allowing customers to place orders for home delivery.

The pan-Asian chain said it's followed Government advice and has devised a schedule that will allow staff to slowly return to work at their own discretion.

The phased opening will very much form a test and learn approach for the business.

The first sites to open will be Wagamama's delivery kitchens (Peckham, Hackney, Bow and Leeds) with Peckham and Hackney opening on Thursday April 30.

Emma Woods, Wagamama CEO said: "We have made the decision to start a phased re-opening for delivery, with the initial opening of our delivery kitchens.

"We have taken medical advice on how we keep our teams safe in a kitchen environment from a doctor who advises on health and safety in challenging operating environments, including previous experience in the cruise industry.

"This will be very much a test and learn approach for the business and rollout depends on team and customer feedback."

In accordance with strict government guidelines, bosses said a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect staff and customers.

Staff will now have to complete mandatory health questionnaires at the start of each shift, while workers will have no contact with delivery riders.

Since the lockdown and tightened restrictions to combat COVID-19, Wagamama has launched a home cookery guide to help nourish the nation.

'Wok from home' is free to access and filmed and presented by Wagamama’s executive chef, Steve Mangleshot.

The show has seen the UK population cooking some of Wagamama’s classic dishes such as the katsu curry and chicken firecracker with the series already obtaining over 1million views in the last month. Fans can access the YouTube channel, here.

This week Nando's also revealed it's back and delivering to UK homes again.

The chain said it has slowly started to reopen restaurants to the public, offering a delivery service via Deliveroo from Tuesday, with more hoping to open in the coming weeks.

The restaurants will operate behind closed doors exclusively for delivery, while the menu will be reduced to help the team maintain social distancing in the kitchen and food prep areas.
