Wagamama reveals more menu changes after Restaurant Group takeover

High street food chain Wagamama has announced a summer menu shake-up that will see its vegan menu expanded.

It comes after the Japanese restaurant launched a new lighter version of its iconic katsu curry last month sending fans into meltdown.

The new dishes will include a layer cake and two exotic flavoured ice creams - pink guava and passion fruit sorbet served with fresh mint.

It comes just seven months after the company was taken over by Frankie and Benny's owner The Restaurant Group in a £559m takeover in December.

The move saw staff receive Christmas bonuses of up to £2,000 each, and has since led to a raft of changes at the popular high street chain, including more food-to-go options.

It marks one of just a few restaurants that are surviving a tough trading period for the high street.

Speaking on the changes, a spokesman said the star of the show will be its mango and matcha layer cake consisting of layers of matcha cream, vanilla sponge and yuzu (a citrus fruit) cream with a mango and passion fruit purée, topped with a fresh raspberry compote.

The ice creams include flavours chocolate and orange blossom served with a passion fruit coulis and fresh mint and strawberry and yuzu ice cream served with a raspberry compote and fresh mint.

Wagamama chief marketing officer, Ross Farquhar, said: "Over the last two years we’ve seen demand for vegan dishes grow and grow, and that’s spurred us on to develop new recipes and use new ingredients.

"Whether you’re vegan or not our new desserts, ranging from mango and matcha layer cake to strawberry and yuzu ice cream, taste fantastic.  But we’re especially proud that our vegan guests can now enjoy a treat as Summer rolls in."

The vegan desserts are part of Wagamama’s innovative summer menu which features the Naked Katsu curry designed as a lighter alternative to the classic dish.
