Wagamama launch new chicken Katsu curry - which now has half the calories

Surely one of the most iconic dishes on the high street, Wagamama's famous katsu curry is one of the most popular items on the menu.

So much so that Wagamama has decided to take it one step further by launching a new, naked katsu curry - a lighter version of the historic meal.

While the original meal that we all know and love contains a whopping 1,134 calories per serving, complete with crispy panko-coated chicken slathered in an aromatic curry sauce and served up alongside sticky rice and salad, the new, healthy offering has just half that, at 607 calories per serving.

Featuring grilled curried chicken on a bed of brown rice, alongside edamame beans, shredded carrots, dressed mixed leaves and Japanese pickles, as well as a side of that beloved katsu curry sauce.

But it's hardly surprising that the high street chain has decided to launch a reinvented version of the dish, after selling a staggering 815 tonnes of katsu curry sauce last year, as well as 3.5 million chicken katsu curry dishes - thats 10,000 every day.

Ross Farquhar, wagamama Chief Marketing Officer said: “The chicken katsu curry is our most iconic dish, enjoyed by a huge number of guests all year round.

As we get into summer many of us are looking for lighter options, but that shouldn’t always mean skipping our favourites. We developed the naked katsu curry to satisfy both – the lighter version of a classic.”

The nutritionist behind the dish, Caroline Cromar, commented: “Not only does the new naked katsu contain over 40% less calories, it’s also packed with healthy ingredients – brown rice for a slow release of energy, edamame which is a great source of fibre and grilled chicken for lean protein, overall leaving you feeling fuller for longer.”
