Wagamama is set to add a vegan ‘fish and chips’ dish to its menu for the New Year.
Those taking on Veganuary - hitting a new vegan diet for the first month of the year - will be able to order it from today at the Japanese chain’s restaurants nationwide.
The star of the dish is the tempura-coated ‘f-sh’, a mix of soy, rice and pea protein, which emulates the flaky texture of fish.
The ‘chips’, meanwhile, are roasted sweet potatoes and red onions, served with the Wagamama ‘firecracker’ sauce.
It also comes with crushed and minted edamame beans (in a nod to mushy peas), katsu curry sauce (in a nod to, erm, curry sauce), waga tartare with Japanese pickles, chilli and, for the traditionalists, a lemon wedge.
Half of Wagamama’s menu is now plant-based, with the chain being the first multi-site high street business to offer a substantial vegan menu.

“We’re so proud of our 50% plant-based menu and we’re committed to encouraging more people to experience our plant-based options for themselves to help make a sustainable difference for our planet,” said chain CEO Thomas Heier.
“Which is why we’re focusing on offering dishes that are so delicious, they might even tempt the most uncompromising meat-eater to eat more plants, even if it’s just about making one sustainable swap a week.”
The dish, Tempura F-ish + Bang Bang Yaki-imo, to give it its full name, costs £12.95, and will be available all through January.
