WA woman charged after allegedly attending birthday party during quarantine period

The 29-year-old woman has been charged over allegedly attending a birthday party during a self-isolation period.

A WA woman has been charged over allegedly failing to self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a trip Victoria, after police were told she attended a birthday party.

The 29-year-old woman from Eaton, two hours south of Perth, arrived in Western Australia on a flight from Victoria on June 30.

Upon arrival she was issued with a self-quarantine direction to isolate in her own home for the next 14 days.

Police allege on July 11 the woman attended a birthday party, that was also attended by a large number of elderly people.

Police were alerted and charged the woman with one count of failing to comply with a direction.

She is due to appear in court at a later date.

Doctor warns of complacency

Andrew Miller, president of the Australian Medical Association WA said people needed to take self-isolation seriously.

"If you don't follow the rules and think you'll get away with it then you're exactly the kind of person that's going to cause death and devastation in our community," Dr Miller said.

"There's about 600,000 people around the world that have been killed by coronavirus so far and a lot of them would've caught it from someone who had no symptoms.

As cases continue to rise in the eastern states Mr Miller said the State Government needed to crack down harder on exemptions for travel into WA.

"The government has to have really good reasons [to grant exemptions], they've been granting tens of thousands of exemptions for people to come in here," he said.

"Now that there's community spread in other states they need to cut off that sort of travel and it needs to be truly essential only and they need to be open and tell us all of the numbers."
