Openers Caleb Jewell and Tim Ward have put on a Sheffield Shield century stand as Tasmania made solid inroads to Western Australia's first innings in Hobart.

The Tigers reached 0-133 at tea on day two of their Bellerive Oval clash, in reply to the visitor's 9(dec)-405.

Jewell (72 from 121 balls) has been the more aggressive of the pair, with Ward unbeaten alongside him on 58 from 138 deliveries.

Fringe Test quick Jhye Richardson, who claimed eight wickets for the match in an eye-catching display in WA's last-start win over Queensland, went wicketless from 12 overs.

Test allrounder Cameron Green chipped in with five overs that conceded seven runs, after scoring just 15 with the bat on day one.

Earlier, WA skipper Sam Whiteman finished unbeaten on 176, his highest first-class score.

Whiteman, who has taken over the captaincy from the injured Shaun Marsh on his return to the side from concussion, resumed on 151 after batting through almost all of day one.

He passed his previous best of 174 in a 309-ball knock that included 20 fours and one six.

Richardson started the day alongside Whiteman but couldn't add to his overnight score of 43, becoming Gabe Bell's third victim of the innings.

Veteran Tasmania quick Peter Siddle got rid of tailenders Matthew Kelly and Cameron Gannon cheaply before Whiteman declared.

Jewell and Ward survived about 45 minutes of play before lunch, getting Tasmania to 0-33.

Whiteman, who played for Australia A seven years ago, posed his eighth first-class century on Sunday to help dig ladder-leaders WA out of a spot of bother at 4-47.

Tim Paine is a notable absentee for Tasmania, with the former Test captain opting to return to cricket via a second XI game against South Australia which began on Monday in Hobart.

The 36-year-old stood down from the role on Friday after a sexting scandal involving a female Cricket Tasmania colleague in 2017 was made public.
