WA records one new local COVID-19 case in vaccinated hotel quarantine security guard

A security guard at a Perth quarantine hotel has become Western Australia's latest local case of COVID-19.

The man, who is vaccinated, returned a positive result after a routine swab and is now in hotel quarantine.

Genomic sequencing is underway to determine what variant the man has.

Authorities say they are still investigating whether he was infectious in the community.

Three of the security guard's close contacts are isolating while awaiting their own test results.

There are five new exposure sites connected to the security guard, with contact tracers urging West Australians to check the Healthy WA website regularly.

People who attended the Mekan Chargrill and Kebabs shop in Nyaree on December 30 from 1:15pm to 2:15pm are required to isolate until they receive a negative COVID-19 test result.

People who attended these places at these times need to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms:

  • Spudshed Spearwood, December 31, 11:15pm to midnight
  • BP Kardinya, December 31, 12:15am to 12:45am
  • Murdoch University, Building 515, December 30, 7:30pm to 8:00pm
  • Murdoch University, Building 340, December 30, 2:15pm to midnight

The latest case is not linked to the backpacker cluster, which remains at 16 cases.

The Health Department has released an updated list of exposure sites visited by members of that cluster, including a number of beach car parks in the south-west.

A petrol station in the southern Perth suburb of Hamilton Hill and numerous shops in South Bunbury and Busselton are among the new exposure sites.

A further six cases of the virus have been detected in returned travellers, all of whom are in quarantine.

WA's total number of COVID-19 cases now stands at 1,168, with 1,119 people recovered and 39 active confirmed cases.
