WA premier's office evacuated over package

The electorate office of West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has been evacuated after a suspicious package was thrown into the building.

Police and firefighters were called to the office in Rockingham, south of Perth, on Tuesday afternoon to investigate the item which was wrapped in tinfoil.

A spokesperson for the premier said one staff member was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The incident comes just four days out from the state election and follows the premier indirectly receiving a death threat on the campaign trail.

The premier's spokesperson confirmed the threat was made by a man who had approached Labor's candidate for Carine, Paul Liburne, at an early voting centre in Hillarys on Monday.

Police are investigating the threat.

Mr McGowan said his staff were unharmed but he would head down to check on their welfare, describing the item as being wrapped in tinfoil.

"A package was thrown under the window at the front of the office at the staff ... a guy ran in and ran out and did it," he told ABC radio.

"Because of who I am and the heightened situation with the election on Saturday, they evacuated the office.

"The police have come so I'll head down there and make sure my staff are OK and see what's going on."

Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup condemned the incident.

"Any attempted violence or threats like this towards the premier, his office or any political candidate is abhorrent," he posted on social media.

"The beauty of our democracy is that elections are peaceful - this is a dangerous trend we are seeing worldwide and I condemn it wholeheartedly."
