Western Australia police have shot a man during a disturbance in Pingelly, about 160 kilometres from Perth.

Officers were called to a residence about 4.15am on Sunday after reports of a man there acting aggressively and erratically.

The man, in his 20s, approached police armed with knives.

An officer deployed a Taser, but was unsuccessful in subduing the man.

The officer then discharged their firearm, wounding the man.

The man was flown to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

Inquiries continue.

The Police Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate inquiry.
