Decision to taser driver lands police officer in court on assault charges

A Perth police officer who tasered a man following a random breath test in Fremantle has pleaded not guilty to assault charges.

Senior Constable Grantley James Keenan was charged with two counts of common assault after a Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) investigation earlier this year.

The investigation concluded Senior Constable Keenan, 46, had acted unlawfully and committed serious misconduct during a roadside random breath test in Fremantle in March 2017.

The tasering incident was captured on video by one of two passengers in the man's car.

The group had been on their way to dinner and the driver did not have any alcohol on his system.

But Senior Constable Keenan told the CCC he believed the man presented a physical threat to police because of the way he had pulled his car over.

Appearing in Fremantle Magistrates Court, Senior Constable Keenan entered pleas of not guilty, meaning the matter will now proceed to trial.

Three earlier police internal investigations had cleared him of any wrongdoing, but he was stood aside on full pay in light of the CCC report before being charged with assault earlier this month.
