'I've got help and I've got through it': WA Opposition Leader reveals he was diagnosed with depression

Zak Kirkup says his depression was "a private and very personal matter".

Western Australia's recently appointed Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup has revealed he was diagnosed with depression last summer.

The 33-year-old said he had been treated for the illness and believed it was an important issue to be open about.

"I think it's important that we shine a light on this and talk about this without the stigma that's often attached," he said.

But Mr Kirkup did not reveal what triggered his illness.

"Depression for everybody is a very personal experience," he said.

"This was a private and very personal matter in myself that was confined to me.

"If there's concern that people have that I've suffered alongside them, if they're worried about the fact that that might make me a worse or better leader, I can promise you I understand the emotions that I've experienced, and I've got help and I've got through it.

"Yes, we have bad days, but we understand the suffering that's been out there in the community."

Deputy Opposition Leader Libby Mettam said she had been aware Mr Kirkup had struggled last summer but defended his credentials as party leader.

"Like many West Australians it means that he can relate, it means that he can reach out for help and he has," she said.

"I actually think it has illustrated not a weakness but a strength, and I have every confidence in Zak as the leader of the Opposition."

Mr Kirkup was the latest in a growing line of public figures to reveal their battles with depression.

Former federal Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull went on to become prime minister after suffering depression a decade ago.

Former Liberal Trade minister Andrew Robb has battled the condition for more than four decades, while former WA premier Geoff Gallop resigned after speaking out about suffering from the condition.
