WA MP Celebrates His Resignation By Doing A Shoey In Parliament Because Why TF Not?

shoey in parliament

A Labor MP from Western Australia has concluded his career in politics in the Aussie-ist way possible; by partaking in the time-honoured national pastime that is a well-earned shoey… in parliament, no less!

The tattooed and mulleted politician Kyle McGinn, who served two terms as a member for Mining and Pastoral Region, delivered the stunt while announcing his resignation from the Western Australia Legislative Council earlier this week.

Towards the end of his valedictory speech, McGinn was seen removing his sneaker, cracking open a can of CBCo, and proceeding to drink the beer from his shoe.

You know, typical politician stuff

“I thought so long and hard about how I would finish this speech”, McGinn said.

“My constituents in the Goldfields I think will be particularly appreciative.”

McGinn then offered a customary “cheers” as laughter and applause was heard throughout the parliament chamber.

“There’s only one way to do it and I’m used to getting told off, so we might as well get this over and done with,” McGinn added, likely thwarting an oncoming burp (or bracing for a throat infection).

For her part, Legislative Council President Alanna Clohesy barely concealed a smile as she called for order and instructed McGinn to sit down.

Speaking of the stunt during an interview on 6PR on Thursday, McGinn told radio hosts Steve Mills and Karl Langdon that it was a shoey for the people, by the people and of the people.

“I think parliament can often seem inaccessible”, McGinn said.

“Sometimes you just celebrate your own way and that has been me the whole way through.”

Fittingly for Australian politics, it’s not the first time a representative has made (beer) waves.

Back in 2022, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made headlines after being captured sculling a beer while attending a Gang Of Youths concert, which might just be the most Australian sentence I’ve ever written.

Anyway, my sandshoe is looking thirsty and it’s five o’clock somewhere. Here’s hoping this brew isn’t fermented with tinea.
