WA man extradited, charged over alleged rape of woman in 1993

A 41-year-old man who was extradited from Western Australia to the Northern Territory has been charged over an alleged rape that occurred more than 20 years ago.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the Katherine Local Court today over a host of historic charges, including unlawfully entering a building, stealing and breaching bail.

He also faced fresh charges laid today of unlawful assault with intent to have carnal knowledge, aggravated assault and deprivation of liberty.

The new charges came after NT Police allegedly made a DNA breakthrough they said linked him to the rape of a woman in Katherine in 1993.

"A 41-year-old man was identified as a person of interest after his DNA matched blood left at the scene," Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Malogorski said.

He was extradited from Kununurra to the Northern Territory on September 15.

He was remanded in custody until October 23.
