WA hard border allegedly breached by teen driver, passenger speeding through checkpoint

A 17-year-old driver and his 24-year-old passenger have been charged after they allegedly sped through a checkpoint at Eucla on the West Australian border and failed to stop for police.

Police said the teenager was attempting to cross WA's hard border and return to the state from New South Wales, via Victoria and South Australia.

After his G2G pass was rejected multiple times, he applied for another pass on Sunday, suggesting he had been in SA for the past fortnight.

The pair then attempted to cross the border after 4:00pm on Monday, but the teenager was rejected from entering WA after officers learned he had in fact been in NSW and Victoria in the previous 14 days.

Police allege their vehicle returned about 6:25pm and the car was driven through the checkpoint at high speed, failing to stop.

They were located 20 kilometres east of Norseman and were arrested without incident, with both subsequently tested for COVID-19.

They have each been charged with three counts of failing to comply with a direction under the state's Emergency Management Act.

The 24-year-old is due in court later today and the 17-year-old is scheduled to face Perth Children's Court on November 23.
