WA cop charged over child abuse material

A WA police officer has been suspended over several offences related to child abuse material. (AAP)

A senior West Australian police officer has been suspended after being charged with several offences related to child abuse material.

The male senior constable from the Mid West-Gascoyne district was arrested by the Australian Federal Police on Thursday.

WA Police on Friday said the officer had been stood down from duty. He was refused bail and was due to face Geraldton Magistrates Court.

"As the matter is subject of an Australian Federal Police investigation, WA Police Force is not able to provide any further details regarding the investigation or the specific alleged offences," a statement read.

"The officer will remain stood down, pending the outcome of the court process."
