Coach Ash Wilson said Newcastle were "our own worst enemies" as Sydney continued their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 2-0 win over Newcastle at Cromer Park on Sunday.
The win moved the Sky Blues to 12 points and kept them on top of the W-League ladder after six rounds while Newcastle, on four points, slipped from fifth to sixth place and five points out of the top four as they head for the bye next weekend.
The Jets went into the match buoyed after a 1-1 draw against Brisbane was followed by a dominant 4-1 victory over Western Sydney. It was also in-form striker Tara Andrews' 100th appearance for the club.
Andrews went into the round as the league's equal leading scorer with Canberra's Michelle Heyman after four goals in as many outings but could not celebrate her milestone match with another.
Newcastle started and finished strong but Sydney led 1-0 at the break then 2-0 by the 61st minute.
The first clear-cut chance of the game came in the 13th minute when an outstretched Jets shot-stopper Claire Coelho swatted away a long-range effort from Sydney defender Ally Green.
Sunny Franco and Rhianna Pollicina both had long-range attempts for Newcastle in the 18th and 24th minutes respectively without success and all of the Jets' first-half attempts came from outside of the 18-yard box.
Sydney broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute through former Jets striker Cortnee Vine. Princess Ibini drove at pace towards the box, laid off to Mackenzie Hawkesby on her right, who found Vine unmarked on the right edge of the 18-yard box. Vine's shot, possibly a cross, sailed over Coelho's head into the top left corner.
Last year's W-League leading scorer Remy Siemsen looked to have made it 2-0 five minutes later when she put the ball into the back of the net from close range only to be ruled offside.
However, it was Siemsen who extended the lead in the 61st. Coelho skied the ball under pressure on the edge of the 18-yard box with Siemsen gunning straight towards her after the had been played long.
The ball fell to Siemsen, who chested it down before turning and firing into the net. Coelho had scrambled to get back into the box and managed to get a hand to the ball but could not stop it.
The Jets threw everything they could at Sydney's goal in the final stages of the match with the best chance coming when Pollicina sprayed a close-range effort over the bar in the 92nd minute.
"We had good patches but I think we were our own worst enemies with the ball, just trying to force things into areas when people were under pressure and the execution of our passes at times," Wilson said.
"We weren't really taking care of them as much as I would have liked.
"I don't think it deserved to be a 2-0 scoreline. I don't think that they created overly an amazing number of chances. I think they were a little bit more composed than us for periods of the game and we just tried to rush things."
In other round-six results, Melbourne Victory (7) beat Adelaide (9) 1-0 on Friday night at Marden Sports Complex and Brisbane (10) beat Melbourne City (4) 3-2 at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Heyman produced a hat-trick as Canberra (11) beat Western Sydney (3) 3-0 at Viking Park on Saturday. Perth (1) had the bye.
