A Volkswagen Golf driver spotted allegedly speeding at 128mph on the M66 on Tuesday (August 31) faces a ban, say road police.

Greater Manchester Road Police said they clocked the driver hitting 128mph, which is 58mph over the speed limit, on a busy stretch of the M66 at 7.08pm.

The driver was arrested and will appear in court and could face a lengthy ban and fine.

GMP tweeted: "This Golf was sighted by #ME14 earlier on the M66 at speed. Unbeknown to the driver, he was being followed by an unmarked motorway patrol.

"A calibrated follow check against the Golf revealed a speed of 128mph!!! Driver summonsed to court, a ban awaits!"
