Vurnon Anita leaves Leeds United as contract is terminated by mutual consent

Leeds United have confirmed that Vurnon Anita's contract at Elland Road has been terminated by mutual consent.

The Dutchman signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road in July 2017 but struggled to nail down a consistent place in Thomas Christiansen's starting XI, acting mainly as cover for injuries before disappearing from the first-team picture completely.

The 30-year-old also failed to crack the team when Paul Heckingbottom arrived in February 2018 and was not given a squad number for the 2018-19 season, as Marcelo Bielsa omitted him from his first-team squad.

A loan move back to the Netherland with Willem II followed last season, where he made 27 appearances.

During this summer the former Newcastle United Championship winner was linked with moves to Greece and the MLS, but nothing has materialised.

Leeds have now chosen to get Anita off their books after just 22 appearances and the versatile Netherlands international is now free to find a new club.

His exit comes after Leeds sent Laurens De Bock on loan to Sunderland for the season.
