Vurnon Anita breaks his silence following Leeds United exit

Former Leeds United man Vurnon Anita insists he is "definitely not done in football" after taking the next step in his career.

The Netherlands international spent two years at Elland Road after leaving previous club Newcastle United in 2017.

He made 22 appearances for Leeds in all competitions before his contract was terminated by mutual consent in September of last year.

An ankle injury disrupted his first season in West Yorkshire and once he recovered, he found himself way down the pecking order.

A season on loan with Dutch side Willem II followed in 2018-19 ahead of his permanent departure from Leeds.

Anita was without a club until he joined Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia in February.

However, he managed only three appearances before the coronavirus pandemic struck and he found himself out of contract again over the summer.

Anita subsequently returned to the Netherlands and, at the end of August, signed for Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk on a deal until the end of this season.

"I’m happy to be here and with the philosophy of the way we play," the 31-year-old told ChronicleLive.

"Although we play to stay in the Eredivisie, our way of playing is with good football.

"I’m one of the older players in the team and I like to help younger team-mates to develop themselves and grow as a person and a footballer.

"I’m 31 and definitely not done in football. I hope that I can extend my career as long as I can.

"If that is with RKC or another team, I don’t know. But now is the main focus to stay with RKC in the Eredivisie."

Anita ended up at Leeds after a five-year spell at Newcastle, in which he suffered relegation from the Premier League before helping the team win promotion back to the top flight.

Boss at the time, Rafa Benitez, was apparently keen to retain the player's services but the club opted not to offered him a new deal.

"I had some conversations with the manager," he recalled.

"We told each other that we both would like to extend my contract with Newcastle.

"Unfortunately, the club let me know that their choice was to give me no new contract.

"I regret that decision but on the other hand, that’s football.

"Life goes on and I have no hard feelings against Newcastle United. I still follow the club and their matches."
