Vulnerable Edinburgh pensioners left in pouring rain after jab appointments changed

A group of vulnerable OAP's from Edinburgh were left waiting in horrible weather after their third Covid booster jabs were rescheduled to the following day, with no notice.

The elderly members of the health centre in the capital showed up for their jabs, only to be told that due to an "administrative blunder", they had not been notified that the appointments had moved.

The relevant health authorities have been under fire since the incident, as the Daily Record also reports.

One pensioner from Bruntsfield in Edinburgh said they were among the group who were "hung out to dry" when she arrived at the Tollcross Health Centre, to closed doors during stormy rain and wind on Saturday morning, November 6.

The 86-year-old woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "The gates were closed, there were people queuing, including a blind man, and no sign of anybody.

"People were angry, they were trying to phone and couldn't get through to anybody.

"It was pouring rain and there was a strong wind. One man went away to a cafe to wait there.

"After about 25 minutes I couldn't wait any longer, the weather was so dreadful.

"It's absolutely shocking - they just hung us out to dry.

"They keep saying on television the boosters are not being taken up.

"But you're trying to get booked and you can't and then they make mistakes like this.

"To let all these folk down on such a day was just awful.

"Having to stand out in the rain and wind at my age was ridiculous."

The woman ended up getting her booster jab 24 hours later, after the group realised the appointments had been changed to the Sunday morning instead.

The Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, which is the main body responsible for these booster jabs, has since apologised for the mistake, and confirmed that an investigation has begun.

A spokeswoman for the partnership said: "With our partners, we are investigating an instance over the weekend where some people were scheduled to receive their booster vaccination at Ponton Street, and then were unable to, due to an operational change.

"We understand some people were impacted and recognise the inconvenience this has caused.

"As a priority, we have been working hard to contact all those impacted directly to pass on our sincere apologies and ensure that they are rescheduled to receive their vaccination, without any further delay."
